Sarracenia seeds gone fridge!

A couple of days ago I started stratification of my Sarracenia seeds. I managed to obtain seed from my own plants since I tried pollinationg for the first time. I harvested the seed in September-October.

 The seeds were put in minigrip bags with wet peat moss. I used to stratificate Sarracenia seeds in plastic containers but since I had quite many crosses I thought my parents wouldn't appreciate filling the vegetable shelf ^^; So the seeds will be there 4 weeks meaning I'm going to take them out in xmas week

  
Tossa pari päivää sitten pistin tötterölehtien siemenet jääkaappiin kylmäkäsittelyyn :) Näin lyhyeksi esittelyksi: kaikki tötterölehtien siemenet tulee stratifioida eli kylmäkäsitellä. Siemenet eivät idä ilman käsittelyä ja kylmäkäsittelyn täytyy olla kostea. Jos siemenet pistäää pelkästään pussissa jääkaappiin niin ne eivät yule itämään.
 Itse lusikoin minigrippussiin märkää turvetta ja ripottelen siemenet päälle. Siemenet on vaaleita ja ne huomaa helposti. Käsittely kestää minimissään 4 viikkoa, mutta esim. S. purpurean siemenet voi tarvita jopa 5 kuukauden kylmäkäsittelyn. Käsittelyn jälkeen simenet ripotellaan turpeen tai rahkasammalen päälle ja sijoitetaan +20C lämpöön.

Oh boy time has fled very rapidly since those days. I haven't had enough time to post photos. I forgot my camera home and therefore I had to use my iPhone for shooting. I didn't take that many photos because I used the most of my time at my own carnivorous plant area

On tässä pitänny jo pari päivää sitten tehdä postaus tuosta orkideanäyttelystä. Oon siivoillu ja muun muassa päivitelly petokasvit.fi - sivustoa  Eli viime viikonloppuna oltiin hesassa kasvien kanssa.  Multa jäi kunnollinen kamera kotiin enkä muutenkaan ehtinyt räpsiä hirveesti kun piti omalla pöydällä olla siellä kolmannessa kerroksessa ^^; Tässä nyt näitä orkideakuvia:

Originally they had reserver one table only but since I saw a lone table wondering at the hall I asked if I could get it and they let me. Then my table grew from the length of 1,8 m to 3,6 m. My main point was to show people carnivorous plants but I also sold sort of plants (cephs, utrics, pygmy gemmae) and planting material (peat moss and dried long fiber sphagnum moss).
Many were surpised by the plants and showed the common "they're gonna eat your arm and heeelp me!!). Normal reactions yeah....However luckily I met a few people who really knew about these plants and maybe the first time I didn't feel that stupid when talking about higlanders and growing conditions. Like there are persons like me that undertand me!

For the first time ever carnivorous plants were introduced as their own table at Finnish orchid exhibition in 2015.


Mut ja kasvit löysi G18-salin kolmannesta kerroksesta. Alunperin mulle oli varattu vain yksi pöytä mutta kun perjantaina rakentaessa aluetta huomasin että yksinäinen pöytä ajelehtii vastakkaisella seinustalla oli pakko ottaa se messiin. Näyttely pidettiin sen verran myöhään että olin jo ehtinyt laittaa lähes kaikki talvilevolliset talvilevolle. Pari purpureaa ja darlingtonian nappasin mukaan pieneksi tausta tueksi- Muutoin näyttelyalue koostui lähes yksinomaan trooppisista kasveista.

Myin myös pienimuotoisesti lihiksiä, cephoja, vesiherneitä ja kääpiökihokkien itusilmuja. Kasvumateriaaleista oli turvetta ja kuivattua rahkasammalta myynnissä.

Eniten porukkaa lappasi lauantaina. Kaiken kaikkiaan viikonloppu oli tosi siisti ja enpä olsii ikinä uskonnu kun 2 vuotta sitten kävin elämäni ensimmäistä kertaa kyseisessä näyttelyssä niin kahden vuoden päästä olisin samalla paikalla mutta näytteilleasettelijana. Phew Kiitos!

Orchid Exhibition in Helsinki this weekend!

 
 I received a facebook message a month ago asking me to join with my plants this year's Finnish orchid exhibition. The event in quite only in its size in our country so I thought why not. I will have my own table and I will be selling a small amount of carnivores there. About half of my plants are receicing their dormancy at the moment. (I put them to basement on 14.10. that makes over a month so far!). To say it trought I won't be taking any flytraps there which might be a big question mark to beginners - whyy noo snaping traps in exhibition?!


Jos alhaalla olevasta posterista ei tullu saatua vielä selvää niin juu, olen tulossa orkideayhdistyksen näyttelyyn tänä viikonloppuna. Mutten itse kävijänä vaan esittelijänä! :-) Mua pyydettiin yhdistyksen puolesta tulee esittelee lihansyöjäkasveja heh, niinkuin oltiinhan me Pihapiiri-messuillakin tänä vuonna vieri vieren! Kiitti kutsusta!

Tuun tosiaan pienen kasvikuorman kanssa pääasiassa näyttämään kasveja mutta myyn myös pienimuotoisesti kasveja. Tähän aikaan vuodesta ei viitsi  paljoa ottaa riskejä myynnin puolesta. En halua että ihmiset ostaa trooppisia pistokkaista jotka sitten kuolee Suomen kylmässä kun vievät ne kotiin. Eli turvaudun tällä kertaa vesiherneisiin ja otan pari australian kääpiökannua mukaan (Cephalotus follicularis).

Lähes kaikki mun talvilevollisista kasveista (kärpäsloukut, tötterölehdet) on unilla tähän aikaan vuodesta, mutta pari hyvännäköistä S. purpureaa löytyi ja samaten ruukullinen Darlingtonia californicaa lähtee esittelyyn. Trooppisia lähtee mukaan mutta viikonloppuna ilmat alkaa sitten kylmetä että toivottavasti eivät ota nokkiinsa. Tarkoituksena olisi myös napana kukkiva Heliamphora mukaan. Mulla on erään puolalaisen kanssa pölytysprosessi meneillään, mutta toivon hartaasti että kasvi ei ottaisi näyttelystä itseensä....

Et sellasta! Tulkaa ihmeessä kattelee, jos ette mua niin ainakin kasveja!

My main concern is not how to preserve the plants conditions there but our weather. Jeez it's getting chilly here! I will be heading to Helsinki on friday (pe) but on sunday when we should leave the place its freezing! I'm worried how to not make my plants go throught freeze in short distances.

temperate sphagnum growing attempt

I'm looking forward trying to grow this temperate spaghnum. The containers are in our cold greenhouse (outdoors)at the moment. I wonder what it would do if you started to grow it in tropical conditions. Would it die?

I also planted some D. rotundifolia seeds on top.

 
Turkulaiset rahkasammaleet on nyt vadeissa kasvihuoneessa. Saas nähdä alkavatko  kasvaa (=suostuvatko elämään). Ripottelin rammalten päälle vähän pyöreälehtikihokin (NL) siemeniä. Toi "rahkis" on Suomen oloissa kasvanutta joten mietin miten se saattaisi reagoida jos pistäisin sitä  terraarioon. Kuoliskohan trooppisuuteen?

On October 16th I received Heliamphora pollen or more closely, anthers from a fellower CPUK grower. I stored the letter in our frinde until now. I have never done this sort of thing before so I had no clue whats going to happen whatsoever. I have had this Heliamphora heterodoxa x minor since 2012 and now it has 2 flowerstalks! :-)

"Pollinating Heliamphora can be difficult, since the stigma stops being receptive before the anthers are ready to release their pollen. The anthers are stimulated to do so by insect vibration, which adds a further complication." http://heliamphora.us/Heliamphora%20pollination.html

 I knew I would'nt be able to pollinate the first flower since you can't pollinate the first flower without additional pollen. And of course its neat to create hybrids - if the pollination is succesful!'

 
Koin tässä yksi päivä jänniä kun aloin pölyttelemään aurinkotötterön kukkaa -siis "heliä".Sain pariviikkoa sitten saksasta Heliamphoran siitepölyä tarkoituksena pölytellä kukkia ja tehdä risteytyksiä. Minigrippussi on ollu sitä lähtien jääkaapissa.Mulla ei ole heli koskaan kukkinut. Tää kasvi on ollut mulla vuodesta 2012 ja nyt se on ihan kamalan kokoinen (=suuuri!). 

Helin kukka on sellainen että emi on valmiina vastaanottamaan siitepölyä ennen kuin kukan heteet kehittyvät. Tämä estää kukan itsepölytyksen. Eli ensimmäistä kukkaa ei voi pölyttää jos ei ole jo itsellään siitepölyä jossain. Ensimmäisestä kukasta voi sitten kerätä pölyt ja käyttää ne seuraavia kukkia varten.
Sitten ne heteet. heteet ei vapauta siitepölyä ilman tiheää väriää. Luonnossa mehilöäiset pölyttävät kukat värinänsä ansiosta. Tyypit maailmalla käyttää äänirautaa mutta mulla ei sellasta ollut. Niinpä piti improta ja käyttää kynsiporan värinää. Note to self: anna heteiden lämmetä eenen kuin alat pelaa niitten kanssa.

As you see the stigma in the middle is white (covered in pollen but you got the idea). When it stops beceing receiptive stigma becomes black. You can also spot that anthers aren't ready yet because they are in position that looks like your fingers when they grip a pencil. Once stigma gets black the anthers flage and get tanned, yellow colour.

I almost got frustrated when trying to think and try methods to get pollen from the anthers. People use commonly a tuning fork to produce buzz that vibrates the anther holding forceps. Eh, got it? ^^;

I don't have a tuning fork so I had to improvise. I used a nail drill. However I noticed that once the anthers had warmed I just had to knock them with a piece of metal.

case: weekend

It came and went gone, once again. And in 40 minutes it's Tuesday. I was about to show more pics but my camera got low in battery. It's been very warm start of November. We usually experience freezing nights in daily basis and day temps rise to 4C (~39F). However now temperatures are about 7C at night and 11 at day! Jeez"! I wish I had keeped my temperate carnivores out of dormancy since they have been sleeping for about 3 weeks by now!




Viikonloppu takana taas hui kamalaa. Torstai-perjantain välisenä yönä käytiin kattoo uusin Bond. Ihan jees ja kaikkea tykitystä ja räjähdyksiä ja ruttusia autoja ja verta ja kaahauskohtauksia ja sellasta. Kannattaa käydä kattoo jos kiinnosta agenttityyppinen heiluminen. Samaisena perjantaina viemään kynttilöitä haudoille ja lauantaista sunnuntaihin oltiin serkuilla Turussa. Käytiin heijän metsäpalstalla ja mukaan lähti kiitos paljon säkillinen rahkasammalta :-B


I went to see the newest Bond (Spectre) on 30th October. It was a night premier! I had to gain some sleep in advanve in order not to fall a sleep during the show hahah :'-D It was quite nice movie. I fancy Craig but I think I prefer Skyfall more. Maybe because of blond Javier Bardom(!?).


Also on the same day we went to light some candles at the close cemetery. I don't tend to hype after Halloween as I have never liked much costume dressing and doing gloomy things like scarying pple. In Finland we get to remember our close relatives that have passed away. Quietly with and honourable ambience.



On Saturday we headed 250km west to Turku so see our cousins. During the trip you get to see cool tunnels like this in the photo. Its the longest in Finland! :P

I found lots of sphagnum! Red and green! I collected there a bit with a land-owners permission (our cousin!). The sphagnum sack is still outside and I think I should do something about it before I totally forget it. I'm gona wash it and try to start growing colonies.


I spotted very nice looking "red horn lichen"( taikka suomeksi punatorvijäkälä) - Cladonia coccifera. Quite pleasent to see bright colours in the middle of fall.
